Border, Beline & Pomene (pics to follow...)

Well, we made it through the border in 45 minutes which was a huge relief compared to the 4 hour wait we had two years ago.  The roads in Mozambique were also a pleasant surprise,  no more detours due to roadworks – nice and easy.  We were however stopped twice by traffic police who insisted we pay a fine for having 4 people in the front because our licence specifies only 2.  I suppose they were right, but strange how we've been travelling for 2 years now and been through many road blocks and never been fined for that.  After handing over R100 per fine, without a receipt in return we were on our way to Beline, our first destination in Mocambique.

We spent two nights at Laguna Camp, Beline.  The campsite was stunning, but a bit far from the water.  The highlight was the fact that right next to our camping spot there was a dilapidated house, filled with BATS!!!!  The kids found this very exciting, and we were stunned at sunset by HUNDREDS (not exaggerating!) of bats flying out of the tiny holes in the walls, right over our campsite.  The kids and Alex would run towards them to see who would be the bravest one to actually catch one in flight.  Lots of giggles and squeals were heard and I think the campsite staff must've thought we had gone batty ourselves!  Lots of fun though, memories we'll never forget.

We've had fun setting up our 'travel gym' at our campsites, which started the first night in Mozambique.  With our Kettlebells, TRX & skipping ropes it's easy to say we're not going to be lazing about this holiday!

After two restful days in Beline we got back in Max for a full day of driving, heading to our most remote campsite – Pomene.  The last 40km were on a very soft sandy single road track.  It was a true test for Max's 4X4 abilities.  The only time we needed to let down the tyres was when we got stuck pulling into our camping spot at the lodge!  It was a fun drive down here, bringing back lots of memories of when we got our Land Cruiser stuck in the swamp while pulling of the road for a passing car 8 years ago.  We were very relieved we didn't need to pull off this time!

Pomene is one of the most STUNNING places I have ever visited!  Our campsite has the view of the ocean on one side, and a lagoon on the other side, which happens to be inhabited with quite a few flamingo's (and lots of crabs which seem to freak the kids out more than the bats did!).  The lodge here has a great swimming pool and restaurant.  These next 4 days we'll also be testing out the rest of the facilities – quadbiking, horseriding, scuba-diving etc .  More of those details in the next blog post!
